ПРИМЕРЫ – EXAMPLES
читать – to read
Russian ending -ть has the same sense, like English preposition to before a verb. It is a sense of infinitive. In order to form Present Tense forms, you must delete the ending -ть and add a new ending, like in the examples below.

я читаю – I read / I am reading
ты читаешь – you (one person) read / you are reading
он читает – he reads / he is reading
она читает – she reads / she is reading
мы читаем – we read / we are reading
вы читаете* – you (many persons) read / you are reading
они читают – they are reading

*This form is also used for one person as an official polite variant.

Упражнение I – Exercise I
Write the following forms of the verbs. Pronounce them.
1) I play (игрáть). 2) We buy (покупáть). 3) She opens (открывать). 4) They begin (начинáть). 5) He knows (знать). 6) You (one) close (закрывать). 5) You (many) get (получать). 6) I type (печатать). 7) He understands (понимать). 8) We describe (описывать). 9) They study (изучать). 10) You (one) show (показывать). 11) She tells (рассказывать). 12) You (many) eat (кушать).

Translate the following sentences from English into Russian
1) I read a magazine. 2) He buys a magazine. 3) She buys a pencil. 4) We are playing together. 5) I get a letter. 6) I read the letter. 6) You (one) close a window. 7) He types a text (текст). 8) We understand the text. 9) She reads a textbook. 10) You (many) eat a soup (суп). 11) They buy a table. 12) He begins to play. 13) She describes a flower. 14) We open a window. 15) A boy buys a magazine. 16) A girl buys chalk.

Read the dialog, translate it into English and memorize it.
- Что ты делаешь сейчас?
- Сейчас я читаю.
- Что ты читаешь? Учебник?
- Нет, я читаю журнал. Это очень интересно.

Упражнение IV – Exercise IV
Read the following couples of words. Direct your attention on the difference between Russian letters И and Ы.
быть (to be) – бить (to beat)
мышка (little mouse) – мишка (little bear)
тыкать (to poke) – тикать (to tick)
мыло (soap) – мило (is pleasant)
ныть (to whine) – нить (threat)
шипи! (hiss) – шипы (spikes)
